I have used the graphic novel, Résistants oubliés, in open day and school engagement workshops and presentations, where it has sparked interesting and engaging discussions amongst British teenagers.
During an operation with his regiment, Bâ was caught and taken prisoner by the Germans, but fortunately for him, he managed to escape along with some fellow Africans to the Vosges where he co-founded the first guerilla based resistance in the area “Maquis des Vosges“. I am current writing an article for French Politics, Culture and Society, about Bâ, examining different post-war commemoration moments and the representations of his life in recent cultural works (a graphic novels, Résistants oubliés (Mouellef and Payan, 2016, a novel Le terroriste noir (Monénembo, 2011) and the feature film Nos Patriotes (Le Bonim, 2017).

Addi Bâ a été fusillé en décembre 1943 à Epinal. These colonial Resistance fighters came from every French imperial territory. That fact that local villagers later testified that Bâ’s presence in the rural Vosges, along with that of other demobilised tirailleurs did not raise much suspicion amongst either the French or the German authorities, can lead us to believe that the French population was more racially diverse during that period than might be depicted or even imagined in the post-war period. He achieved this feat when he defeated French Algerian Cherif Hamia in Paris in 1957 to claim the World Featherweight title. He was labelled as the Black Terrorist by the Germans attempting to arrest local Resistance leaders.

The Daasanach are a semi-nomadic tribe numbering approximately 50,000 whose clans stretch across Sudan, Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. The director, Le Bonim, claims that Bâ’s story is unique. On 13 July 2003, Bâ was posthumously awarded the Resistance Medal — a decoration bestowed by the French Authorities “to recognize the remarkable acts of faith and of courage” that have contributed to the resistance of the French people against the enemy since 18 June 1940.

Mali's new president Bah Ndaw has been sworn into office, five weeks after the overthrow of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. Bâ was captured by German forces on 18 November 1943 after he and members of maquis des Vosges attacked a German military unit. On 18 December 1943, Addi Bâ was executed at Épinal along with the leader of the maquis, Marcel Arburger. Born in Guinea in 1923, Addi Bâ arrived in France in 1938 with the family of a colonial tax collector and spent a year in Langeais in Indre-et-Loire before returning to Paris.
The Maquis des Vosges were groups of French resistance fighters during the Second World War. Here at Listwand, we are devoted to helping Africans and the whole world in general get relevant and valuable African contents ranging from the happenings, tribes, rankings and cultures of peoples of African origin in both Africa and the African diaspora. It is essential that the image of a who was a Résistant be diversified to better reflect the reality of this period and to speak to France’s contemporary multicultural reality.
While the film presents a highly problematic depiction of the Bâ (highly sexualised, too quick to take uncalculated risks), it is nevertheless important that pedagogical material and an interview with the director have been produced to be used by teachers for this year’s CNRD (Concours National de la Résistance et de la Déportation) which takes as its theme – S’engager dans la Résistance.
Son combat pour la France n'a été reconnu que 60 ans après sa mort, en 2003, notamment grâce à l'insistance du colonel Maurice Rives, qui a mené l'enquête pour retrouver des témoignages et des preuves du parcours d'Addi Bâ.
On lui a envoyé le scénario, on s’est rencontré et il a dit oui tout de suite.
Pour le réalisateur, le destin d'Addi Bâ va au-delà son courage et la résistance : «Cette histoire m’a interpellé sur ce qu’est l’engagement, d’être différent tout en étant dans un combat commun, comment se constitue un réseau, comment on traite celui qui vient d’ailleurs. C’est une chance parce que c’est un acteur puissant, qui s’engage, qui incarne avec cette capacité à être à la fois physique et très intérieur. A street in Tollaincourt and another in Langeais are also named in his honour. Addi Ba Mamadou currently rests in the colonial square of the national necropolis of Colmar in France. Today (18th of December 2017) marks the 74th anniversary of the execution by the German authorities of the Guinean Resistance fighter and the creator of the first maquis in the Vosges, Addi Bâ Mamadou (or Mamadou Hady Bâ), in Epinal.
Bâ had been living in France since 1933 working as a cook for a tax collector in the Indre-et-Loire and then at the Mosquée de Paris.
