We spent most of the afternoon exploring the Nielsen, and also enjoyed a playthrough of the Dvorak Nocturne and Sibelius' Andante Festivo. Apart from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, much of the rest of the programme was also unfamiliar (albeit maybe more immediately accessible) to many, and the audience buzz was that it had been a most stimulating and enjoyable concert. We played a selection of seasonal music including the recently composed Christmas Overture by Nigel Hess, and the ever popular Leroy Anderson classics. The Concertino replaced the planned Orchestral Suite by Frank Bridge which was unexpectedly unavailable, and it was a fascinating discovery – haunting and evocative of the immediate pre-war period (it was written in 1939 and dedicated to Boyd Neel).
